Documented presence timeouts in seven work chat apps
There is no single work-chat idle timer. Slack documents Away after 10 minutes of desktop inactivity; Zoom documents a configurable 15-minute default. Our review of seven products also found platform-specific rules and important gaps: Microsoft Teams describes a few minutes rather than a fixed number, and Outlook commonly displays presence supplied by another chat service. These are documentation findings, not stopwatch experiments.

Findings you can cite
| Finding | Value | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Slack desktop inactivity | 10 minutes | Slack's documented automatic Away rule for desktop inactivity; the mobile rule is leaving or closing the app. Sources: Slack: Set your Slack status and availability |
| Zoom automatic Away default | 15 minutes, configurable | Zoom documents this default for supported Workplace desktop clients and the Zoom Web App; it is not a universal mobile timer. Sources: Zoom: Changing your presence status to Away when inactive |
| Google Chat on desktop | Idle at 5 minutes; Away after more than 10 minutes | Google distinguishes two states. Idle is shown only on desktop; Away can also mean disconnected or manually set. Sources: Google Chat Help: Change your availability status in Google Chat |
| Teams desktop precision | A few minutes; no exact count in the reviewed rule | Microsoft Learn describes inactivity and lock behavior without promising a five-minute timer across clients. Sources: Microsoft Learn: User presence in Teams |
| Discord timer precision | Automatic Idle, no number stated | The current official status article describes an unspecified period away from the keyboard. We do not substitute an unofficial five-minute claim. Sources: Discord: Changing Online Status |
What each product actually documents
Read the state name and surface together. A default that users can change is different from an undocumented implementation detail, and a recent-activity icon is different from a named Away state. The table preserves those distinctions so that its numbers can be quoted without implying every client behaves identically.
| Product and surface | Documented idle or Away behavior | What the rule does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Teams, computer | Away after a few minutes of inactivity or when locked; Learn says sleep produces Offline. | No fixed five-minute guarantee; Support separately describes sleep as an Away trigger. |
| Slack, desktop and mobile | Desktop: Away after 10 minutes inactive. Mobile: Away after navigating away or closing the app. | The desktop duration does not describe mobile background behavior. |
| Zoom Workplace desktop and Web App | Automatic Away defaults to 15 minutes and can be adjusted. | No matching mobile inactivity default is specified in the checked settings article. |
| Google Chat, desktop | Idle after 5 minutes inactive in Gmail or Chat; Away after more than 10 minutes idle. | Idle is desktop-only; Away also includes manual Away and no internet. |
| Webex App, desktop/mobile/web indicators | Windows/Mac availability follows computer use; mobile follows reading/sending messages. The green icon description refers to activity in the last 10 minutes. | That icon description does not establish a universal automatic Away timer; the gray handset Away state is unavailable on web. |
| Discord | Automatic Idle after an unspecified period away from the keyboard; manual Idle can persist indefinitely. | The official article supplies no precise automatic timer or equivalent mobile threshold. |
| Outlook, supported work/school clients | New Outlook and Outlook on the web display recipients' Teams presence; classic integration can depend on the chat service. | No independent Outlook idle countdown is established; Teams presence is not available in consumer Outlook.com. |
Teams has device rules and a documentation discrepancy
Microsoft Learn says the most recently active device determines presence when someone is signed in on multiple devices. It also describes mobile Away when Teams runs in the background and mobile Offline after 24 hours of inactivity. That last number is an Offline rule, not the desktop Away delay.
The two Microsoft pages disagree in their simplified treatment of computer sleep: Learn says Offline, while the user support page groups sleep with Away triggers. We retain that discrepancy instead of selecting a universal sleep outcome. The support page also says users cannot set a duration for Available. A status-duration menu therefore does not prove that Available overrides idle detection.
Slack and Google use different meanings of activity
Slack explicitly separates the availability dot from the text-and-emoji status message. A status message with a future expiry is not evidence that the availability dot will remain active until then. Its mobile navigation rule also makes a desktop-only timeout summary incomplete.
Google's status table distinguishes five-minute Idle from more-than-ten-minute Away. Separately, its notification guide calls someone idle after over 30 seconds of inactivity for notification routing. That shorter interval helps route notifications between devices; it is not a replacement for either public presence threshold. Mixing those documents would produce a misleading comparison.
Zoom, Webex, and Discord need different qualifications
Zoom's Away setting is documented for Windows, macOS, Linux, and the Web App. Becoming active in its desktop, mobile, or web app clears Away. A configurable default should be described as a default, rather than as a fixed rule for everyone.
Webex distinguishes desktop computer activity from mobile message activity, and its availability hierarchy places meeting states above Available. The ten-minute reference appears in the green icon's descriptive text; the reviewed article does not label it a universal automatic Away countdown. We report the actual wording's scope.
Discord documents automatic Idle and a manual Idle override but gives no precise interval. Its June 2020 update date is visible on the page still served at the check date. Current accessibility does not make that article a newly published 2026 announcement or validate a number absent from it.
Outlook is often displaying another service's presence
Microsoft's Outlook support article says new Outlook and the business web experience use Teams information. Outlook for Mac describes calendar and Teams/Skype integration. Those are integration rules, so listing Outlook as an independent five-minute timer would add a fact the sources do not supply.
Before comparing two people, establish the Outlook version, work or school versus consumer account, and connected chat service. A calendar Busy indicator, an automatic reply, and an inactivity-derived Away state answer different questions. None of the reviewed documents defines its presence indicator as a measurement of completed work.
How to cite this review
Cite Idle Pilot's documentation review, checked October 28, 2026, covering seven products. Retain the product, client, state name, and whether a quoted value is a default. Link the vendor page too. No original experiment or employer-account observation was conducted.
Method
Selected the seven products specified in the study scope and opened their first-party help or administrator documentation on October 28, 2026.
Recorded exact numerical thresholds only when present in the opened document, including icon descriptions where explicitly labeled. Search snippets were discovery aids, not the evidence for a timeout.
Separated automatic presence, manual status duration, calendar state, notification routing, and Offline behavior. Compared desktop, web, and mobile only where the source supported a distinction.
Recorded source update dates when visible; otherwise marked the publication date Not stated. No accounts, device timers, or employer configurations were tested.
Limitations
- This is a document comparison, not an experiment across operating systems, app versions, power settings, networks, or multiple signed-in devices.
- Vendor help pages can change without a dated changelog. The checked date records retrieval, not a guarantee of future behavior.
- Teams sleep behavior is inconsistent between the two cited Microsoft pages. Webex's green icon description is narrower evidence than an explicit auto-Away specification.
- No precise automatic Discord Idle delay or independent Outlook idle timer was established by the reviewed primary sources.
What we could not establish
- A universal five-minute Teams Away timer across desktop, browser, and mobile.
- A five-minute automatic Discord timer as a current vendor-documented guarantee.
- Google Chat's 30-second notification-routing inactivity rule as its public Away timeout.
- A green dot, in any of these products, as proof that someone is working or immediately able to reply.
