What four Reddit threads recommend for staying green
In a convenience sample of 80 comments across four public Reddit threads, 26 comments positively described a technical approach to changing availability. Mouse-motion approaches and keep-awake utilities each appeared in eight comments. Another 13 favored accepting Away or judging work by outcomes, with one overlapping technical advice. These counts describe this bounded sample, not Reddit as a whole, and do not establish which methods work.

The unit counted is a comment. A reply that clearly endorsed an approach could count even if it did not introduce a new idea. General thanks, applause, jokes, questions, failure-only reports, and warning-only statements received no positive approach code. We did not count votes as endorsements or infer a contributor's employment, location, or identity.
Multiple labels were allowed when one comment supported more than one approach. Consequently, the rows are not mutually exclusive. The 26 technical-method comments generated 29 technical labels; the broader outcome/communication category contributed 13 labels, including one comment already in the technical total. Forty-two comments had no positive code.
| Coded approach | Comments among the 80 inspected | Threads containing a positive code |
|---|---|---|
| Mouse jigglers or physical mouse-motion approaches | 8 | 3 of 4 |
| Keep-awake utilities | 8 | 1 of 4 |
| Calls or self-meetings | 6 | 3 of 4 |
| Phone/mobile-client approaches | 4 | 2 of 4 |
| Held-key approaches | 2 | 2 of 4 |
| Software input automation or macros | 1 | 1 of 4 |
| Presentation or video approaches | 0 | 0 of 4 in this fixed comment subset |
| Accept Away, communicate asynchronously, judge outputs, or change employer | 13 | 3 of 4 |
| Any technical approach, deduplicated within each comment | 26 | 4 of 4 |
| No positive approach code | 42 | 4 of 4 |
Exactly which threads entered the sample
We purposively chose three relevant, accessible Teams threads from the first discovery search and the first Slack-focused result we opened from the second search. All four opened threads qualified and all four were coded. This was a small, access-dependent sample, not a random draw, a comprehensive search, or a preregistered study.
Thread headers supplied relative ages rather than consistently readable absolute publication dates. We preserve those labels and the exact retrieval date instead of inferring a precise date range. The captured comments include later replies; a thread's age must not be treated as the date of every comment.

How the searches and comment cutoff work
The two discovery queries, both run on October 28, 2026, were: site:reddit.com/r "Teams" "stay green" "mouse"; and site:reddit.com/r "Slack" "stay active" mouse. Search results identified candidate pages. We opened the actual threads and read the sampled comments; snippets were not substituted for inaccessible text.
For each included page, we followed its displayed default order and took the first 20 visible comments with substantive bodies, traversing nested replies in the rendered sequence. We skipped removed-body placeholders and collapsed More replies controls. A deleted account's still-readable comment remained eligible. The original question and edits were context only, outside the 80-comment denominator.
The evidence record retains each sampled comment's public permalink, its position, a compact paraphrase, and its codes. This fixed list makes the coding auditable even if votes, ordering, or visible replies later change. The sampling recipe can be repeated, but a new retrieval may return a different list; it would be a new snapshot.
What counted as a recommendation
Positive codes required an explicit suggestion, reported personal use, a stated intention to try an identified approach, or a substantive argument for accepting Away, asynchronous replies, or output-based evaluation. Generic agreement without an identifiable approach did not count. A method mentioned only as a failure was not a positive recommendation.
The categories separate mouse-motion approaches from explicit software macros, keep-awake utilities, held keys, phone clients, calls/self-meetings, and presentations/video. The separate outcome/communication category captures alternatives to changing the indicator. Ambiguous short replies were interpreted only through their immediately visible parent context. No author histories were used.
The codebook is descriptive. Counting a claim does not endorse it, verify its safety, or turn it into instructions. In particular, no claim that a method is hidden from IT was treated as a factual finding about employer monitoring.
Why the result changes when the sample changes
The platform imbalance matters: three threads discuss Teams and one discusses Slack. All eight keep-awake utility codes came from the Slack thread. Their concentration can reflect one conversation's topic and reply structure, rather than a stable difference between product users.
Nested discussion also matters. A method can attract a sequence of questions, caveats, and acknowledgments before another top-level suggestion appears. Taking the first 20 rendered comments deliberately preserves that context, but it gives popular branches more influence. Equal quotas prevent a large thread from supplying the whole sample; they do not make the comments independent observations.
Zero presentation/video codes means zero positive codes in these specific 80 comments. It does not mean Reddit never recommends that approach. Some uncoded surrounding discussion was visible in page responses, but no claims or totals were drawn from those extra comments.
How to use or cite these findings
Cite this as Idle Pilot's October 28, 2026 convenience sample of four public threads and 80 comments, with 20 comments per thread. Retain the denominator and consult current vendor documentation separately.
The sample cannot estimate worker prevalence, Reddit-wide preferences, effectiveness, or employer visibility. A larger study would need a defined thread population, retrieval window, and independent coding.
Method
Discovery date and retrieval date: October 28, 2026. Search queries and exact four-thread list appear above; the evidence file fixes all 80 comment permalinks and codes.
Inclusion: a publicly readable English discussion about maintaining Teams or Slack availability, with at least 20 visible substantive comment bodies. All four opened candidate threads were included.
Inspected for coding: exactly 4 threads and 80 comment bodies. Retrieved pages also displayed surrounding uncoded comments; no exhaustive thread enumeration or total-Reddit count is claimed.
Single coder; one fixed 20-comment quota per thread; nested replies and repeat contributors retained; removed bodies and hidden replies excluded; multi-label approach coding with no vote or user weighting.
Content analysis only; no experiments, customer records, identities, or distinct-person calculation.
Limitations
- Search visibility, convenience selection, default ranking, unequal platform coverage, and small size prevent Reddit-wide or worker-population inference.
- Comments are neither independent people nor verified accounts of successful behavior. Replies, repeated contributors, sarcasm, promotion, and historical edits can affect coding.
- Only one coder classified the material; no inter-rater reliability or statistical confidence interval was calculated.
- Absolute publication dates were not consistently available; relative ages and the retrieval date are disclosed.
- Public comment permalinks permit audit but may later resolve to edited or deleted content. No usernames, account histories, or identifying customer data were retained.
What we could not establish
- Any method in this sample reliably keeps Teams or Slack active on current clients.
- Any commenter-described method is undetectable, approved by an employer, or safe for a managed device.
- The sample represents Reddit as a whole, all remote workers, or a geographic population.
- Counts of comments equal counts of unique people or verified incidents.
