When do people schedule presence?

In a snapshot of 30 qualifying Idle Pilot accounts, 17 had a saved start time in the 09:00 hour and 19 had an end time in the 17:00 hour on their earliest enabled day. These are configured local hours, not hours worked. The app seeds a 09:00–17:00 weekday schedule, so the snapshot cannot establish a preferred workday.

What the saved hours show

The two distributions describe the clock hours saved in the schedule. A start in the 09:00 hour covers 09:00 through 09:59 in the account’s selected schedule time zone. The end distribution follows the same rule. We do not combine these into one nine-to-five group: that would require a separate joint count and privacy review.

Each account contributes one representative day so that a seven-day schedule does not receive more weight than a one-day schedule. We choose the earliest enabled day in the stored Sunday-to-Saturday order with valid start and end values. That is a reproducible convention, not a claim that this day is the account’s most typical day.

Why this is not evidence of a preferred workday

Idle Pilot automatically seeds a Monday-to-Friday schedule from 09:00 to 17:00 when an account is linked. Customers can change it. The snapshot does not establish whether a saved hour came from an unchanged default or a deliberate edit. A cluster around these hours is therefore compatible with default-setting bias.

This is also a selected sample of people using one presence product. It is not a survey of remote workers, a census of paid customers, or an estimate of when people are most productive. We do not infer a job role, employer policy, work location, or work effort from a saved schedule.

What is withheld to protect small groups

We considered day-by-day patterns, number of enabled days, Lunch Break configuration, and broad time-zone regions. Those distributions are withheld because at least one cell or its complement would contain fewer than ten accounts. Publishing only a large cell alongside the cohort total could reveal a small complementary count by subtraction.

Only the two broad hour distributions are released. In each, both the displayed hour group and the combined other-hours group meet the ten-account threshold. There are no account identifiers, exact minute-level schedules, employer names, workplace links, or cross-tabulations in the downloadable dataset.

Saved configuration is different from observed availability

A saved schedule records an intended configuration. It does not prove that an account was online at those times, that a workplace connection was valid, that a person read messages, or that work occurred. A paused schedule, an expired credential, a holiday or a provider state can make configured hours differ from observed availability.

The study does not read messages or reconstruct individual activity histories. A single snapshot cannot establish how long a setting remained in place, whether a customer changed it later, or a seasonal trend. A later snapshot would need a fresh extraction and the same privacy checks before any comparison.

Method

The read-only extraction selected accounts with scheduling enabled and at least one enabled day with populated start and end times. Accounts needed an active/trialing subscription record or an unexpired product trial. The protected owner account and accounts marked excluded by the acquisition system were omitted.

Aggregation ran on the production host. Only aggregate counts left the database; no identity, credential, message, or individual schedule records were exported. The public dataset contains the privacy-reviewed subset of the aggregate output.

For each account, the earliest enabled valid day in Sunday-to-Saturday order supplied the start and end hour. Stored clock values were interpreted as schedule-local times, not shifted into UTC. Each account was counted once in each distribution.

Every released nonzero cell, including the other-hours complement, contains at least ten accounts. Other candidate distributions and all cross-tabulations were withheld. The full cohort has thirty accounts.

Limitations

  • Small, self-selected product sample: results cannot be generalized to remote workers or employers.
  • The automatically seeded 09:00–17:00 weekday schedule is a major confounder; there is no default-versus-edited history in this study.
  • Snapshot, not observed online time, a work log, productivity evidence or a customer survey.
  • The earliest enabled day can differ from another enabled day. Start and end counts must not be joined to infer individual patterns.
  • Subscription status and trial dates define inclusion at extraction time; this is not a complete measure of successful live presence sessions.

What we could not establish

  • Whether most users deliberately prefer nine-to-five hours.
  • Whether Lunch Break use, weekend work or time-zone mix increased or decreased.
  • Whether a configured hour corresponds to actual work or message responsiveness.

FAQ

Does this show that most remote workers work nine to five?
No. It is a selected snapshot of thirty accounts on one product. The product seeds those hours by default, and the study cannot distinguish default retention from a deliberate choice.
Are these times UTC?
No. They are saved local clock hours in the account’s configured schedule time zone. The public dataset does not disclose individual time zones.
Were the same accounts counted more than once?
Each qualifying account is counted once in the start-hour distribution and once in the separate end-hour distribution. It is not counted once per enabled day.
Can I use these numbers as attendance or productivity evidence?
No. Saved configuration does not establish online sessions, message reading, hours worked or productivity. No individual activity history was used.
Why are time-zone and lunch figures missing?
They are withheld because a cell or its complementary group would fall below the ten-account privacy threshold. Missing figures must not be read as zero.
Can I cite or download the study?
Yes. Cite Idle Pilot, the snapshot timestamp and the selected sample of thirty qualifying accounts. Include the default-setting and configuration-versus-activity limitations. The aggregate JSON dataset is linked in Sources.
